When Things Go Bump in the Night

You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.
Psalm 91:5-6

Not long after my head hit the pillow, I was startled by a loud noise. I lifted my head to free both ears in order to listen for a repeat of that sound.

“What was that?” I said in a loud alarming whisper to my husband, who was already on his way to dreamland for the night.

Bump..bump…thump!

“There it is again!”

We were not alone in the house. I could hear my folks in the room directly below us were fast asleep, snoring, as if they were having a conversation all of their own. Perhaps my brother in the basement was making the noise. But that noise? It sounded like someone was either breaking in, or brother was moving some major furniture downstairs.

My quick thinking husband said, “It’s got to be an animal!”

He immediately grabbed the flashlight by the bed and headed down the stairs as I followed quickly close behind him. He didn’t hesitate stepping out on the porch with his flashlight in hand, shining the light in the direction of the wooden garbage enclosure. I followed up with the floodlights on the house. Our fears gave way to a childlike delight as we watched a bear rocking the wooden garbage bin back and forth against the house. He didn’t stay long having us now in his sights. We decided it was time to head back to bed, stopping first at the top of the basement stairs to let brother know that we had just seen a bear. He said he thought we were making all the noise. I chuckled and as we headed back to bed.

An hour later, we heard it again. We grabbed our flashlight and quickly headed downstairs just as brother was racing up the stairs from the basement. We were now all armed with our lights… flashlight, floodlights, and camera light.

It helps to have a light when things go bump in the night. God knew we would have times when we would need a light in the dark. Without a light, we can become fearful. God’s Word tells us repeatedly to “fear not.” Jesus Himself came to be the light of the world and lead us out of darkness. His Word is both a light and a lamp for our feet. Next time you have trouble in the night, or a circumstance that brings night to the soul, look for the light and allow God, who is light, to cast out all fear. For those of us in Christ, the light is always on, but it is important to stay plugged into the source.

May you find yourself embraced by God’s love today, so filled with God’s light and presence that you burn brighter and brighter each day, bringing a childlike delight to your soul.

Taste and See

Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him. Psalm 34:8 NIV

Who doesn’t enjoy a great meal? Pictured here is one of my husband’s favorite meals. We prepared it together after enjoying time in the great outdoors. On the plate is barbequed chicken, vegetable salad in a sour cream dressing, fresh corn removed from the cob, asparagus, and a glass of cold milk. You may have to taste for yourself to know if it was truly good. But if everything here is to your liking, you might take small bites, chewing slowly, in order to savor the flavors of each item as you replenish the body with delicious food. You will have to take my word for it that the food on this plate tasted very good and my husband was a very happy and content man after finishing this meal.

In Psalm 34, we are invited to taste and see that the Lord is good. When we partake of Him and take refuge in Him, we are blessed. He is to the soul what food is to the body. He not only fills us, but satisfies our deepest longings, needs, and desires as we live in a trust relationship with Him. As we take time to meditate on His Word and chew slowly His words of truth, promise, hope and assurance, we find life and strength for the soul.

You might try taking a notecard and writing a Scripture for the day on it so that you can take it with you. Say it aloud many times throughout the day. Commit it to memory and allow it to become part of how you think and feel. May these words be sweeter than honey to your mouth. (See Psalm 119:103) Don’t take my word for it, but taste for yourself and see that the Lord is good!

Changing Landscape

I couldn’t believe it when I walked around the cabin and found that the tallest oak tree had died. It was the tree that towered above the others and it was showing no signs of life. I love nature and all of its beauty and I was sure to miss that old tree. It was necessary to remove that particular tree as it was much too close to the house to let it remain. We would have to adjust to the changing landscape which was now a large dead tree stump surrounded by the more lush green trees that towered over it.

An encounter with death is somewhat the same. The future of our loved one here on earth has been cut short and halted. We are left with only “a stump of memories” of our life together with them. We must learn to adjust with the ever-changing landscape and live with the presence of the stump now in plain sight.

As a mother who has lost a child, I can’t tell you this new reality has been an easy adjustment. There have been days I just wanted to sit on my stump and contemplate this new view of life for what seemed like long periods of time. I acknowledged the lifelessness in my own soul, like that of the old oak tree. But while sitting there on the stump, I also acknowleged someone else; the God of restoration. He says he will restore the years the locust has eaten. (Joel 2:25). In fact he has lots to say about restoration.

Nahum 2:2 NIV
The Lord will restore the splendor of Jacob like the splendor of Israel, though destroyers have laid them waste and have ruined their vines.

Zechariah 10:6 NIV
“I will strengthen Judah and save the tribes of Joseph. I will restore them because I have compassion on them. They will be as though I had not rejected them, for I am the Lord their God and I will answer them.

Acts 3:21 NIV
Heaven must receive him until the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets.

Are you sitting on your own stump today wondering how you will make it? I ask that God may restore you to the joy of your salvation today. If you are in a relationship with Jesus, you are alive! It is His desire that you would bear much fruit. He promises to abide in us as we are in Him. May God make you lush and green.

Psalm 51:12
John 15:8
John 15:4

Comforted to Comfort

2 Cor. 1:3-5 NIV
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.

I feel so blessed to have a neighbor who grows beautiful roses in her front yard. It is such a joy to see those flowers in bloom from across the street, but even more wonderful the times she has shared a bouquet with me personally. Growing roses and giving them away is just one of the ways she shares God’s love and comfort. Last night love came in the form of peach cobbler…Yum! She is a willing vessel that God has used to pour into my life.

My part is not only to receive with gratitude what the gift giver wishes to give, but to instead be willing to give that love away myself. I don’t have a rose garden, but I can love and comfort others with how God designed me. It is in the giving that we truly receive. God is the giver of every good and perfect gift. (James 1:17) Will we except with gratitude His gifts and hold onto them for ourselves? Or will we be willing to share what we have received and pour ourselves out for the sake of others around us?

God comforts us in our troubles in order that we would comfort others in their troubles. If you have suffered loss, or trouble of any kind, accept God’s gift of comfort. In time you may find you are even able to give that comfort away.

Comfort and Joy

“…I will turn their mourning into gladness; I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow.”
Jeremiah 31:13 NIV

“Joy has been by far the best emotion I have experienced through my grief.”
pg. 108 Shadow’s Rest: A Life Song

The joy that God gives is so much better than settling for a lesser version of a manufactured good time or happy experience. Happy will always be dependent upon our circumstances, or at best will be a conscious choice or attitude adjustment on our part when whatever we are facing is unhappy. Positive thoughts are helpful and will take us a certain distance down the road, but what happens when sorrows are still there? You may be tempted like me to “suck it up and move on.” I have learned that sorrow is a necessary road to a lasting joy.

Joy is truly a gift that often surprises me! I am learning to accept the gifts that God wants to give me; his gifts of and comfort and joy in place of my sorrow. I have found this joy to be a joy that lasts!

Isaiah 35:10 NIV
…and those the Lord has rescued will return. They will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their heads. Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away.

How far is it?

The Path

Have you ever wandered a path through the woods and lost your sense of how far you have really traveled? Particulary when you have never been on the trail before, it seems to take much longer to arrive at the destination.

I walk just about every evening in the neighborhood where I live with my husband and our dog. It is part of our evening routine. We walk the same way, down the same streets, and it takes just about the same amount of time each time we do it. My husband is my encourager in these walks. He likes to walk with me, sometimes in silence; other times wanting to converse about the day. For the most part our walks are predictable, except for those Florida summer rainstorms that we must time our walks around.

Grief on the other hand, is very unpredictable. How long does it take I would ask? Have I done it right? Have I taken enough time? The path is unfamiliar and sometimes I have had to double back around and retrace my steps. Rather than lose my step, I have chosen to walk with someone who never lets me fall. Sometimes I do the talking, but I am working on being a better listener these days. He always walks with me and encourages me. My friend’s name is Jesus. He is familiar with the path and always faithful!

Isaiah 53:3 AMP
He was despised and rejected and forsaken by men, a Man of sorrows and pains, and acquainted with grief and sickness…

I know longer question the distance I have traveled, or even worry about whether I have arrived at any sort of destination, but what I have discovered is I am really beginning to enjoy the appointed times of walking and talking with my friend, Jesus.

WHAT A FRIEND I HAVE IN JESUS!

Where’s your focus?

I noticed something recently on a day when the Ocoee was not running…there are alot of rocks! They are all shapes and sizes. In fact, my husband and I started to see things in the shapes of the rocks just like we do clouds sometimes. On this particular day, we both saw the same thing. Can you see it too? If you look closely, you might see a rock that looks like a bear swimming down the river.

If you could see all these rocks before you boarded your raft, you might not want to go river rafting. You most likely will hear a safety talk first about the dangers of river rafting just before you embark. Part of the danger is related to the rocks and what can happen if you fall out of the boat. It is these very rocks that are producing those rapids we all enjoy. But, if we just focused on the rocks and their danger, we might miss all of the adventure. Just as the rocks are there to create an experience of exhilaration, so our hardships are meant to create something in each of us.

Our hardships are never meant to stop us, but to create a place in our hearts that can be used by Him. (God) pg. 59 Shadow’s Rest: A Life Song

Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
